Abstract

Konsep Kolaborasi is the Indonesian-ization of the ENGLISH ‘COLLABORATION’. Most these works are collaboration. Even if I was responsible for the bulk of the material – for getting the ball rolling, organizing rehearsals and recording the album – plenty of the sound you hear were never written down on a piece of paper, or sung to a performer, by me: Gusti’s Sudarta voice on the “shadow” tracks, Shahzad Ismaily’s improvisation, I Made Subandi’s kotekan rhythms, Ida Bagus Widnyana’s chords, etc….This is, in a way, yet another East meets West fusion album – another in long string of projects which began to emerge in the 1960s. The difference here being that I have spent a little more time with southeast Asia and its musical traditions, and southeast Asians have spent more time with Euro-American materials, than might have been the norm decades ago. But maybe more importantly, none of us are pretending that Kolaborasi represents some short of global utopian harmony. These sounds and the ways they were produced are a metaphor for the world today: problematic process, untidy interactions, and sometimes serendipitous surprises. It’s also a metaphor for inequity.
