Abstract

The Javanese community has a local (kejawen) tradition which is referred to as ruwatan. It had been in existence before the formal religions were introduced to Java. It is believed to be able to eliminate sukerta/kesialan (bad luck); therefore, the Javanese ethnic people coming from all the community layers still performed it. It was believed that those who did not perform it would be consumed by Bhatara Kala. Three problems are formulated in this study; they are the factors causing the ruwatan to be maintained, the aspect of sign in its maintenance; and the impact and meaning of its maintenance to the people living at Kumendung Village, Muncar, Banyuwangi, East Java. Qualitative method was used and the data were descriptively and qualitatively analyzed using the theory of discourse, the theory of deconstruction, the theory of hegemony and the theory of semiotics. The results of the study showed 1) the local genius was strengthened to perform ruwatan cultural identity for the Javanese ethnic people; 2) the ruwatan tradition was a means of communication across religions; 3) the ruwatan tradition also contained hyper spirituality; the belief in the ruwatan tradition could develop autonomous strength in various styles of religions and beliefs; and 4) the ruwatan tradition contained multiculturalism and universal civilization. Keywords: Retention, ruwatan, sukerta, and bhatara kala.
