Abstract

The design of chairs in Java is still fully mysterious; the reason is that chairs are still regarded as having sacred “strength” in spite of the globalization era. Art or design is a social product which has historical aspect and is contextually produced in the era when it is needed. In this context, sociology of art can be used to analyze art creations such as the design of chairs in Javanese culture. It was used to analyze the design of chairs in this study. Combining sociology and art is a unique and interesting approach for analyzing chairs in Java. The reason is that the development of art cannot be separated from the people who own it. Such an art approach from sociological paradigm will be directly faced with the treatments on the traditional ideas or issues of the artists whose creative autonomy should be minimized in such a way that there will be coordination among social, economic and ideological aspects. Therefore, a study in the design of chairs using the approach of sociology of art will yield findings related to hierarchy of art and social stratification. Their shapes will be reflected in the elements of the design of chairs. Keywords: Chair, sociology of art, and Java culture.
