Abstract
In general, this study aimed at identifying the comodification of the form of pepalihan and ragam hias
(decoration style) of wadah (the tower used for cremation ceremony) created by IBNP taking place in
the development of the art of decoration style in Bali. In particular, this study aimed at explaining the comodification of forms, the factors causing the forms to be comodified, and the meaning of the pepalihan and ragam hias wadah created by IBNP. This study was designed to be a qualitative one using the theory
of comodification, the theory of aesthetics, and the theory of semiotics. The data were collected using the techniques of observation, interview, document study, and library research. All the data were processed using descriptive, qualitative and interpretative techniques of analysis. The findings showed that the comofication of the forms of pepalihan and ragam hias wadah created by IBNP was the simplification of those developing in 1994. The factors contributing to such a simplification were the shift in the values of
the Balinese socio-culture and globalization. The innovative forms of pepalihan and ragam hias wadah created by IBNP changed the Balinese ‘wadah’ (tower) from being a sacred means of religious ceremony reflecting the strengths of God with His three manifestations (Brahma, Wisnu and Siwa) into an art creation which was beautiful and economic.
