Abstract

The Hindus believe that kajang with its holy characters in it has magical strength. Therefore, it is believed that it helps the souls of those for whom the ceremony is performed reach what is called the Dewata sphere (the sphere of Gods) as stated by the Hindu concept amor iong acinthya, meaning ‘becoming unified with God’. The method used was observation method, in which the painting of kajang used in the ngaben ceremony was observed. Then the data were descriptively and qualitatively analyzed. From the form of the painting point of view, there were several types of kajang (the one designed for those who belong to Brahmin caste, the one designed for those who belong to the ksatrya caste, the one designed for those who belong to the wesia caste, and the one designed for those who belong to the sudra caste). The holy characters they contain are ekaksara, dwiaksara, triaksara, pancaksara, dasaksara, and sodaksara. Based on its functions, the kajang has referential, emotive and magic functions. Seen from the meaning, it means worshiping God with his various manifestations, and proposing to Him. Keywords: Kajang, and wijaksara sacred script
