Abstract

It seems that nowadays the matters pertaining to the state personality and character cannot be separated from the impact of the dominating global culture which has interfered with so many aspects of people’s lives that their behavior tend to be far from the values of the local genius. Ethics and morality have not been normatively referred to as reflected by the corrupting behavior of the elites from the central government to the village government. As a result, the quality of the development in all aspects of life has been low. Performance and life style have been considered more important than ethics and morality; as a result, the bad and good values have not been used as the measurements of the values of daily life. Therefore, a means of education is needed as the basis for forming the state personality and character. By learning from our ancestors, it seems that the heritage of the values of ethics and morality have been packaged in the form of performing art. The product of performing art has been an effective means of communication in communal spirit. The strategy of education through performing art gives priority to education as a whole and refers to the values of the local genius. This is reflected by the wayang performance which is full of the values of life perfectness; even in hastabrata it is explained in detail the universal personality and character of the state leadership. This means that as far as the current context of life is concerned, the values of such a leadership can be transformed into the global ethics and morality, especially wayang which has been acknowledged by UNESCO as the Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
