Abstract
This research aims to search the local identity of traditional ceramic handicrafts and its development in each region that represents the archipelago which focusess on the aspects of: shape, the study of socio- cultural function, the development of the desing from the consumer's demand, and also income from related government, artist's and craftsment. The result of the analysis shows that the fact where making tradtional ceramics is the source of their income. Aesthetic adaptation in the event offacing the consumer's demand, syncronizing its ability with the consumer's demand. Government officials and its offices about the preservation of local identity is very supportive but the implementation and its vision doesn't match. The response of the craftsmen, besides proud, they act hospitable, even though encountering problems. The influence of the taste towards the development of ceramic designs, functions and techniques is really felt especially like seen from the process and products that are finished which are serius and perfect, even though it didn't match on the order because of the lack of equipment and making techniques, the conversion of the function of traditional ceramics to decorative ceramics. The existence of traditional ceramics shows the sign of defence, but only for the basic shapes of traditional ceramics which can be used as a source of information in the next development of design.
