Abstract

Abstract This study is aimed at describing a strategy in teaching the language of dancing Balinese dance in English by practicing the theory of translation for the students of vocational high school in SMKN 1 Gianyar and SMK PGRI Gianyar, Bali, as an effort in improving their English. Besides, this study is also aimed at providing them a skill in stepping in the international level by mastering the strategy of teaching Balinese dance in English so they can help the spread of Balinese culture internationally. All terms and terminology associated with Balinese dance and other things that are still relevant are learnt and then the students practice teaching Balinese dance in English. This paper is a part of the result of IbM (Iptek bagi masyarakat), a community service grant funded by the government of the republic of Indonesia in ISI Denpasar’s DIPA Number : DIPA-042-06.0/2016 dated December 7, 2015. Theoretically, the study is an eclectic one based on the theories concerning translation research methods combined with dance research method, which is started with collecting all the terms related to Balinese dance, then translated into English, in addition to the theory of translation proposed by Nida and Taber. The translation results have been tested in teaching dance to students majoring in Dance department and foreign students who learnt dance in ISI Denpasar . This paper is expected in the first place to provide some insights for those who are interested in translation studies especially terms in Balinese dance and in the second place to be beneficial for translation practices and dancers who want to teach dance in English.
