Abstract

Konsep This short performance which grew out of conversations between Christopher Romero, I Gusti Putu Sudarta and Andy McGraw in Bali this Summer. The story for this experimental performance is based upon the traditional Jataka Buddhist tales. These are the legends of the many incarnations of the Buddha. The Jataka were picked for this collaboration because of the relative foreignness of the material to all of the collaborations. Only one Jataka, Sutasoma, is extant in contemporary Balinese culture. Similarty, the Jataka tales are relatively unknown in the Euro-America tradition, but do appear in older European works, such as the concept of rebirth, re-invention and re-incarnation resonates with a generation increasingly comfortable with the creation of virtual avatars, multi-tasking complex identities and secondlives. The Jataka tale recounted in this experimental performance is the More Jataka in which the Boddhisattva is reborn as a peacock.
