Abstract

Konsep Most of India puppetries exist until the present time in Southern States of India: Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Fewer puppet groups can also be found in other parts of India like Rajasthan, Orissa, and Maharashtra. Perhaps to obtain a wider marketing opportunity, many families of Rajasthan puppeteers, like Purant Bhatt, Babu Bhai, Mahesh, etc. are now living in Shadipur Depot, West Delhi. The puppetry is typically confined to a family hobby. After the ancient royal patronization, most of the artists live frugally as there is no financial support from government as is in China, where the puppeteers enjoy a degree of financial support from the government. Recently, few puppet groups manage to uplift their artistry and gain an international fame and hence improve their life financially into a normal or a little higher than average degree. Despite their financial limitation, the people give proper social respect to puppeteers for their artistic contribution. While Chinese puppetry influenced Japanese, India puppetry gained influences through Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapure. However all of these places share similar narrative source, such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. In addition, other common theme of Asian puppetry includes, purana as well recorded in the Srimad Bhagavatham and animal story based on Panchatantra. In Bali this fable is recorded in an old manuscript known as Tantri Kamandaka, which tells stories like Crane and the turtle, A pilgrimage to the West, Monkey Raises Heal in Heaven, etc. In several countries of Asia, especially India, China, and Indonesia, the monkey king, a hero, is often shown as an ideal embodiment of wisdom and courage, gigantic, and powerful character.
