Abstract

The classical dance of Yogyakarta style has been historically rooted as it has been supported by the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace ‘Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat’. The palace was established after the Gianti Agreement was declared in 1755. It has been considered the center of the legitimate classical cultural art. The other palaces all over the archipelago have been too. The Yogyakarta style traditional classical dance, which has been in existence and developing from the government of Sultan Humengku Buwono I to the government of the current Sultan Hamengku Buwono X is the dance with strict rules. It used only to be the legitimacy of the cultural heritage of the Yogyakarta palace, but now it has been recognized as the wealth of the national cultural heritage which needs to be maintained and developed. Several choreographies of the Yogyakarta style classical dance has been fostered and developed in accordance with the era of his government. Basically, the performing art can be classified depending on its functional context; it can function as a means associated with the sacred traditional belief as well as a secular entertainment. However, development has changed several sacred choreographies into ones used as entertainments. Keywords: Classical dance of Yogyakarta style, cultural heritage, and the palace of Yogyakarta.
