Abstract

Indonesia has numerous local wisdoms in every aspect of life including art. A local wisdom is a set of knowledge and practices in a community, which both comes from any previous generation and the interaction of people with their environment to cope with any problem they face correctly and properly. ‘Kentongan’ (drum made from bamboo or wood which is struck to sound an alarm) exemplifies this. It functions as a multifunctional means of communication. The rhythm of its sound when it is used as a means of announcing things is different from that when it is used to inform a danger, and when it is used to inform that there is a danger. At Dukuh Grintingan, Solo District, Boyolali Regency, Central Java, the ‘kentongan’ is processed as an element of art in the form of Pring Gunung Kawedhar art. It is made of bamboo and has special costume and property. This art functions as an aesthetic expression and binds communal brotherhood. In addition, it also revitalizes aesthetically the early warning system used by the people living in an area with natural disaster.
