Abstract

This study is focused on ongko and pamali, the local geniuses applied by the Bajo ethnic people living in Tiworo Island and Napa Balano, Muna Regency, North East Sulawesi to managing sea sources. The informants in this study were determined using purposive sampling and snowball techniques. The primary and secondary data were obtained through interview, participatory observation, documentation study, and focused group discussion. The data were descriptively and qualitatively analyzed. The results showed that the local culture ‘ongko’ and ‘pamali’-based conservation was implemented to manage sea sources. Pamali or tabo (various kinds of taboos and restrictions) were a set of values and regulations which should not be violated. Those who violate them would be punished by the Sea God. Pamali was related to the sustainability of ecosystem and sea biodata as well as to the safety of individuals and the Bajo people as a whole. They also had what was referred to as ongko, the right to particular areas to manage. Keyword : Sea energy source manage, local wisdom and bajo people
