Abstract

Gamelan orchestra is one of the instruments which interests numerous cross disciplines due to its knowledge and informative content. Almost all the regions in Indonesia have gamelan orchestra with different names, two of which are Java and Bali. The Javanese gamelan orchestra is similar to the Balinese gamelan orchestra in regard to how their instruments are composed, their concepts, knowledge and functions. One of the interesting instruments is what is called gender; Bali has Gender Wayang and Java has Gender Barung. The concept of the Balinese gender wayang is based on the concept of dualism, which appears as the sound which is similar to “ombak” (wave), whereas the concept of the Javanese Gender Barung is more similar to the “binarung” sound. The uniqueness in sound gives similarity in function as the elaboration of melody and role played by the puppet show. The relation between the Balinese gender wayang to the Javanese gender barung in regard to their histories and concepts was found through library research. The analysis of sound through the pitch element using the Sonic Foundary 6.0 and Excel functions to strengthen the relation. The result of the study shows that the Balinese Wayang Gender resembles the Javanese Wayang Barung in the natural science construction, social construction, and aesthetic construction. In the natural science construction, they resemble in regard to the pitch correlation function of wilah tones and in the production of ultrasonic signals. The aesthetic signal indicates that the art of “ombak” and the art of “binarung” give uniqueness in the sense of hearing, and the social construction accompanies the puppet show. Keywords: Gender, waves, binarung, ultrasonic, pitch, and construction
