Abstract
ABSTRACT
Sekala and Niskala are both common terms in Balinese culture. Sekala is the ‘seen’ and Niskala is the ‘unseen.’ They are the tangible and intangible forces of life, which support each other through their opposition. For me this is like the known and the unknown. This philosophy of the opposites is relevant in many aspects of Balinese life. It is central to the Balinese religious beliefs and the way of being. The balance of the light and dark are exemplified in the holy coupling of the Gods and devils. They cannot exist alone but rather rely on each other to make a whole. It is the idea of wholeness, the acceptance of many different opposing ideas and energies which is central to Balinese culture.
My recent paintings explore the inner dialogue with the outer world (nature) in my creative process. I free myself to be fully emersed in the process which I enjoy immensely. This method allows me to balance between the micro and macro cosmos by understanding my experience as a human being and the experience of nature in my surroundings. My paintings are an expression of my inner voice which is a fusion of traditional Balinese ideas expressed in modern Western painting techniques
Painting is my life. I have a thirst from within to maintain an equality between two opposing forces. Through the process of painting I, myself, am contemplating and mirroring the dynamic changes of life . My paintings are therefore a recording of this integration which is the essence of life
Being an introverted artist, I enjoy the process of the internal journey, the mystery the unknown, the void. Both the process and the artwork help me to understand life at a deeper level. It provides answers to my questions about life itself.
The show consists of various size of paintings. The exact arrangement is in accordance with the Balinese color mandala.
I express my gratitude for my life by creating art. The happiest moments I have felt are while I am painting. At times I may have felt alone, and not understood by others in my surrounding, but as a Balinese I do believe I am accompanied by invisible creative forces. The work itself is the result of the dialogue between myself and all that is greater than me.
